Loose Ends

I watched Gus Van Zant's Elephant last night before I went to bed. That was a good idea. I woke up in the middle of the night dreaming about a school massacre which eventually left me staring into the reflective sunglasses of one Business Casual Stag Devil Death Boy. And in case you didn't know, that ain't good. Yikes. Over the weekend, I watched Breaking The Waves and In America. I've seen Breaking The Waves a few times, so it's lost a bit of its impact. But, In America... Jesus Christ was that heavy. I nearly cried. And I haven't done that in 15 years. I had to watch Office Space, Ocean's Eleven, and American Wedding to try to wipe that darkness out of my mind. I was back into safe, superficial waters until I decided to go for the late night viewing of a school massacre. Tonight, I'm going to try to avoid the heavy films and instead watch a nice depressing report on the state of the freedom of the press in the US on Frontline. I heard an interview with the producer yesterday and the state ain't good. Check it out!

Aside from watching depressing movies this weekend, I finished my WZBC O Six Mix, consisting of songs that I heard on a regular basis on 90.3 WZBC over the past year. Some new stuff, some old stuff which got regular play. The set list:

The Neighborhoods - The Prettiest Girl
Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci - Poodle Rockin
Quintron – Places Unknown
Sparks – Metaphors
Stereolab – Interlock
Hot Chip – Over and Over
Greenskeepers – Lotion
Fiery Furnaces – In My Little Thatched Hut
Destroyer - Your Blood
M Ward – Chinese Translation
Camera Obscura – Hey Lloyd, I'm Ready To Be Heartbroken
Nancy DuPree's class (Ghetto Reality) - James Brown
Townes Van Zandt – Waitin Around To Die
Midlake – Roscoe
Band of Horses – Funeral
Nethers – Migratory Birds
TV On The Radio - Staring at the Sun
TV On The Radio - Wolf Like Me
Wolf Parade – I’ll Believe In Anything

Unfortunately, cd's are only 80 minutes long, so several worthy songs did not make the cut. In fact, 5 seconds may get clipped off the end of one of I'll Believe in Anything, as it is. Bastards. Would it kill them to make a 100 or 120 minutes cd? Missing the cut:

Joanna Newsom – Sawdust and Diamonds
Eric Bachmann – Man O War and Carrboro Woman.
Man Man - Van Helsing Boombox
Mission of Burma – Academy Fight Song and Revolver.
Babybird - I forget which song.
Wire - all their songs.

let me know if you're interested (via comment or email) and I'll burn you a copy. I'm pretty sure you can hear samples of most of these songs on iTunes, myspace or elsewhere on the WWW. The sublimely addictive "James Brown" can by found here.

I've been asked to issue a reminder about the upcoming art show. It's this Thursday, February 15th, from 7 to 11 PM at the Gulu Gulu Cafe in Downtown Lynn, MA. Music starts at 8. Directions can be found here.

And lastly, as a general rule, I don't observe valentines day (more out of circumstance than principle, I suppose), but I thought I would pass on this amusing observation from indexed.blogspot.com:

(and Happy Birthday, KAS)

Read Frank Rich's 'The Greatest Story Ever Sold' and watch 'Beerfest'. Both are a hoot.

I have a pile of books sitting in my room that I haven't gotten around to reading, so I can't promise I'll pick up the Rich book, but I'll take your advice on the Beerfest. That does look funny.

Dan -

Speaking of pieces of work...
I noticed "Cheese Snack Retard Dance" is in the show. I'm definitely bringing my checkbook....and a can of gasoline.

Beerfest is great - it's the same people that did Super Troopers which is also great.

please don't light yourself on fire again. it's not funny anymore.

Burn me a copy of the 06 mix! There are only 3 options on the radio dial here: NPR, Clear Channel, and Evangelical. Which is really just one option, hence the most recent music I hear is Rachmaninov. And if you haven't done so yet, go out to the movies to see Pan's Labyrinth. It's sad and lovely.

Wish I could come to the show and watch Kristin buy and burn CSRD.

Dan Nolan said...

consider it burned.

if Kristin burns it without buying it, she's going to be on the receiving end of a Tollbooth. except not with coins. with lice. and dog crap. Don't fuck with me, KB.

American Wedding?? Good lord.

Beerfest was pretty fun. Although my favorite 06 crappy movie that made me laugh my ass off was Grandma's Boy.

better than Snakes on a Plane?

You should do a post to explain "toll booth" to your readers.

I certainly wouldn't burn "CSRD" without buying it. I plan on paying full price and paying in cash. Make sure you have change for a nickel on you that night.

ZING

Come on - you threatened to lice and crap toll booth me. Let's call a truce. None of your other paintings piss me off like "CSRD".

Here's an idea: since you are the one who brought this evil into the world and I'm the one who's life it's ruined, I think the best solution is that we burn it together and afterwards get in bed and spoon for like an hour. Trust me - we will both be much better off after that.

I agree Pan's Labyrinth is a great movie.

Dan Nolan said...

that would be a hell of a publicity stunt. you could buy it, take it off the wall, walk outside and light it on fire in the street. You'd probably get arrested, but we'd probably make it in the Odds and Ends sections of a lot of papers. I'd give you that 12% then.

Dan Nolan said...

speaking of publicity, check out this piece in today's globe and thanks to the prankster principal for the tip. "people come in just to look at the art" says [Gulu Gulu Cafe owner] Feldmannova.

KB said...

That's great! Congrats.

Too bad your next art review will be in the police logs under "arson"

Dan Nolan said...

and then your reporter friend could take the story and run with it. someone could tip him to the history of the Cardboard Art Festival and suggest a pattern of behavior. It would be in all the art and psychology journals.

KB said...

yeah exactly.

Can you post something new - I'm feelin' really "commenty" and I think we ran out of steam on this burning CSRD thing...

Dan Nolan said...

I don't really have anything to post. I just watched a video of Joe Rogan publicly outing Carlos Mencia as a joke stealer, but really. Does anyone fucking care? They're both horribly unfunny. Joe's just jealous because he didn't think to steal jokes so that people might actually think he's funny. And if Mencia's material is stolen, Jesus Christ are there some bad comics out there. Give it up you pathetic hacks. All of you.

love the blog--just started reading and i'm hooked.

Dan Nolan said...

Thanks, Mr. Shain. Good luck with your new blog and hold down the fort out there in OK.

since you're not posting anything new - what do you and VTKers think about the valentine tim hardaway gave to gay people? what does that say about sports and our society as a whole?

I think it says tim hardaway is a douchebag.

Dan Nolan said...

hardaway = douchebag. more comment in forthcoming post.

I need me some filler on my alt.folk mix and I'm stealing that M.Ward song, though technically the missus had put that on her own compilation. M Ward is the glue that binds us. Its not all that really; I mean, its no "Who's Got The Crack" now is it?

Dan Nolan said...

I'm picturing you passed out in a pile of broken cd's and shards of heffen reffer 40's right now. Godspeed, kid. Bring The Companion.
