Pettitte is and always has been a horse. His avg innings pitched per 162 games for his career is 215, and he was at or above that average each of the last three years. Mussina has traditionally been a horse too, with a per 162 career avg of 226, though that has been significantly down over the last 5 years and he's 39 years old now. Grounds for concern.Dan Nolanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13981886295607717368noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18246530.post-18438587161705558852008-07-30T15:59:00.000-04:002008-07-30T15:59:00.000-04:00I thought you wanted us to write Shaka Hislop if w...I thought you wanted us to write Shaka Hislop if we were reading while you were live blogging.

Joba has been very good as has Mussina. Mariano has never looked better. His 57k's to 4 walks is insane. But that is enough Yankee compliments from me. I meant carrying the staff in terms of innings pitched. Mussina and Andy have been your horses. Here are your top seven pitchers by innings pitched.

Andy Pettitte 139.0
Mike Mussina 126.1
C. Wang 95.0
D. Rasner 78.2
J. Chamberlain 78.1
M. Rivera 47.1
K. Farnsworth 44.1

They are also leading the Yankees in wins as well so, yes, they are carrying your staff. Nothing wrong with that, that is what they are paid for. I'm just saying that those are a lot of innings for old guys.Dewy24https://www.blogger.com/profile/10716643865474299323noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18246530.post-62701742996512724852008-07-29T13:25:00.000-04:002008-07-29T13:25:00.000-04:00No "Shaka Hislop"? Eh.

Mussina and Pettitte carrying the pitching staff? not last night. and what about Joba?Dan Nolanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13981886295607717368noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18246530.post-82958037487186424602008-07-29T09:31:00.000-04:002008-07-29T09:31:00.000-04:00How am I the first to comment? There really isn't ...How am I the first to comment?

There really isn't anything you say here that I would disagree with. Until the Yankees don't make the post-season I just assume they will. One thing I look at in the middle of the season is a team's pythagorean record (ESPN's site calls it ExW-L) which calculates what a team's record should be based only on runs scored and runs allowed. It generally gives you an idea of which teams have been lucky and which unlucky. Based on the pythagorean record the Sox should be 3 games better and the Yankees 1 game worse than their current record shows which isn't that much of a difference. Now this isn't science but it does give you an idea of how a team's win/loss record might change in the second half. Last year the Yankees stumbled through the first half despite having a much better pythagorean record. Not surprisingly they came back with a tremendous second half which was more in line with how good their team really was. Also look at their record in 1 run games. The Yankees are 20-11 while the Sox are 14-17! Both of those numbers will even out by October. Barring major injuries on either side I think the Sox will win the AL East by 2 to 5 games and the Yankees will be the AL Wild Card. The playoffs are a complete crap shoot so you are right to think that the Yankees could make a run. I'd just be worried with Wang's pretty awful numbers in the postseason and Hughes coming off an injury and with less than 6 innings of playoff experience. Mussina and Pettitte are carrying your pitching staff right now and I wonder what their arms are going to feel like in October. Not that the Sox don't have problems, just not as many (Manny?).Dewy24https://www.blogger.com/profile/10716643865474299323noreply@blogger.com
