A Marketing Director position is defi...Thanks, KB. A Marketing Director position is definitely not in the budget, but I'll happily buy you a beer and toss around some ideas if you'd be willing. I'd even throw in some pizza. As for your ideas:

1. Other than marketing and website costs, I actually think it's possible to operate this thing with no budget. So, considering that the main financial goal is to create revenue for the artists involved, why not distribute the revenue amongst them. Maybe the percentages could be adjusted, but it seems like a good way to increase the chances of revenues if everyone gets a small cut of everyone else's sales. The rationale behind them having earned that cut is that their art contributes to the size, diversity, and quality of the collection, even if it doesn't sell, and it's the collection that is the foundation of the library, which is what created the sale.

2. The online only idea is an interesting one, but it presents a couple problems. First of all, shipping introduces new levels of cost and risk. Local exchanges would minimize the risk and allow the price to remain lower. Secondly, the local/community aspect of it is a big part of the appeal of it, in theory, at least. It wouldn't be a straight netflix product sharing model; it would be a hybrid of the CSA model and the product sharing model. People are really psyched about the CSA and "buy local" things and this idea would be tapping heavily into that spirit.Dan Nolanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13981886295607717368noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18246530.post-21958391192771889732009-11-22T20:41:54.147-05:002009-11-22T20:41:54.147-05:00Dan -

I think you've over complicating things with the profit-sharing amoung all the artists for the sold pieces. If a piece doesn't sell I'd subscribe to the "too bad so sad" rule for the rest of the artists. The only people sharing this revenue should be the "house" (CSArt) and the artist.

2. While I like the coffee shop viewing / exchange idea. I think you'd be better served by keeping this thing online and factoring in shipping / handling into the membership price. Let's face it, NetFlix took off because people were too lazy to drag their fat asses back and forth to the video store. If someone is subscribing to an Art of the Month Club - they can probably afford to pay shipping. Now you'd have a national market for your art instead of just a local one.

I love the idea though - let me know when you can afford to hire me as your Marketing Director.

KBKBnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18246530.post-78636857132904410012009-11-15T23:27:20.814-05:002009-11-15T23:27:20.814-05:00Hi Xima,

I'd think that a library would work best with a diverse collection of good artists - diversity of art style in the collection might make it more attractive to more subscribers. For the one I'm hoping to start, I'm contacting artists that are local to my area (Boston) and that I think are talented. Like I said, the idea is open source, so people are free to start one up with whomever they like.

As far as the money goes, I was planning on opening a bank account to handle the initial incoming and outgoing payments (from subscribers/buyers, to artists). It should be fairly uncomplicated to begin with, but as the group gets bigger, the members can assign money-managing duties to one of the artists.Dan Nolanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13981886295607717368noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18246530.post-46026247140128790442009-11-15T09:48:09.766-05:002009-11-15T09:48:09.766-05:00Very interesting.
